Double standard: Chris Cuomo and Emily Wilder

It’s getting harder for the establishment media to hide its double standards when dealing with issues.

The very biased coverage of Israel’s bombing of Palestinian civilians, as well as media and religious buildings, is one example.

Now an establishment journalist — the very high-profile Chris Cuomo — committed what appear to be clear ethical violations off and on air for months and kept his job, while a largely unknown journalist — Emily Wilder — was fired for what were considered left-of-center views on Israel and Palestine expressed outside of work, prior and during her short time at the AP.

CNN host Chris Cuomo gave his brother Andrew Cuomo — governor of one of the largest states in the country — ongoing strategy advice as Andrew Cuomo faced several sexual misconduct allegations, and mishandled (and allegedly covered up) New York’s botched covid-19 response.

All the while, Chris repeatedly had his brother on his show on CNN, viewed by millions, which in retrospect was seemingly an attempt to help him whitewash his image. While some in the media rightly called Chris Cuomo out for this and rightly labeled it anywhere from a breach of ethical standards to a really bad idea, CNN recently decided there would be no disciplinary action taken against Chris.

On the other hand, Emily Wilder, a rookie Associate Press reporter, was fired for opinions she expressed outside of her responsibilities as a reporter for the AP. Wilder expressed pro-Palestinian views while in college, but the firing was allegedly due to social media posts that some pro-Israel supporters and the Right objected to. So not in her reporting, and it initially seemed it was not even during her time as a journalist for the AP, although the AP after its initial statement did point to some retweets and statements during her brief time at the AP.

After Wilder’s firing, one of her former journalism professors came to her defense and called her the victim of a “disinformation campaign.” The professor also pointed out the convenient timing of these right-wing critiques gaining traction right after Israel bombed the AP’s headquarters in Israel, almost as if it served as a distraction from Israel’s war crime of specifically targeting the press during hostilities.

Here’s one tweet that the Right finds objectionable. If tweeting views like this is a fireable offense by the establishment outlet AP, but months of free PR and strategy advice from a CNN host to the governor of a state is not, then practices and ethics at media organizations is even more messed up than I thought.
