Hope springs eternal

Yesterday was a difficult day for our country. That’s an understatement — the president attempted a coup, and got enough people in and outside of government to make it an actual existential threat to our democracy.

It was a difficult day for me as well. I started out trying to be positive and tell myself that things aren’t going to be as bad as I feared. Instead, they were magnitudes worse.

Thanks to my family and TYT Army, I have gotten to the point where I feel like there is still hope going forward. The fascists will only win if good people — the large majority of the country — give up.

Saying that what happened yesterday isn’t America, is not true. This is America, or at least a large part of it (74+ Million voted for the guy who was willing to destroy our country to stay in power). Trump’s coup being defeated is just one step on a very long road.

It’s up to those of us who want a better future to fight the fascists, the racists, the sexists, the homophobes, the neocons, the neolibs — all of those who have the power to do good, but who are doing everything they can to abuse that power to prevent the rest of us from getting the life, liberty, and happiness we all can share and all deserve.

We can do it if progressives and allies unify, reveal the establishment for who they are, expose the institutional and physical violence they use against us, and get enough of the majority of what makes America good, to join in the political fight. We can and must succeed.
