The US Solutions Summit and Independent Left News

For this week’s “So we meet (again)…”, here’s a look at the site Independent Left News, which is a co-sponsor of this Saturday’s exciting US Solutions Summit, a free event streaming Saturday, May 22 starting at 4pm Eastern.

Independent Left News, with the fitting URL http://independentleft.news, is a news site updated twice daily which gathers articles, videos, and more from a large variety of sources on the political left. The morning edition today, for example, showcases pieces that were published on The Daily Poster, Nation of Change, Jacobin Magazine, and more. It’s a great place to get headlines from media outlets that are NOT corporate owned.

I’m friends online with the creator and editor of Independent Left News, who goes by @IndLeftNews on Twitter. I just found out, when he DMed me the other day, that he’s also the Event Coordinator for an exciting online event called the US Solutions Summit this Saturday, May 22, starting at 4pm US Eastern Time .

It will feature a series of round-table discussions on topics that are important for progressives and the left, like Direct Action vs. Electoral Politics, Getting Money out of Politics, and more — featuring over 20 panelists, including:

  • Shahid Buttar, who ran an aggressive progressive campaign against Nancy Pelosi in 2020

  • Brent Welder, Justice Democrat endorsed by Bernie Sanders in his race against Kevin Yoder (and also my favorite surprise Power Panel host in TYT history).

  • Howie Hawkins, Green Party Presidential candidate in 2020.

  • Christina Tobin, currently chair of the Free and Equal Elections Foundation and formerly national ballot access coordinator of the 2008 Ralph Nader campaign (I met her in person at Politicon 2019!)

Sounds really impressive, right? This is the exactly the kind of thing we need more of on the left — a variety of viewpoints from different places: ranging from local activists and candidates to nationally-known figures, coming together to discuss issues that are crucial to the success of progressives and the country.

I didn’t mention what’s probably the biggest name yet though because I wanted people to see what the event was about, and a number of less controversial people who are participating, before mentioning him.

  • Jimmy Dore, comedian and host of The Jimmy Dore show.

  • Comedian, wife, and co-host Stef Zamorano and comedian and frequent Jimmy Dore Show guest Ron Placone are among the featured guests as well

Some people I know and follow will be turned off by Jimmy. I understand — I no longer listen to Jimmy due to some of his recent statements and the bad blood between him other progressives. I almost wrote off the event because of this.

**BUT**

Then I thought about it, and thought some more. And I decided I should not let one speaker keep me from attending what I otherwise think is a great event where they will be having round tables discussing a number of important progressive issues that are crucial to getting rid of the corporate establishment.

When I attended Politicon in 2019, two of the featured speakers were Ana Kasparian and Kyle Kulinski, which is why I went. There were also events with James Carville, James Comey, Ann Coulter, Sarah Huckabee Sanders, Tomi Lahren… I disagree with all of these people profoundly. But that didn’t stop me from attending.

We need more events like this — especially on the left — to discuss real solutions.

Some great speakers, important roundtable topics, and it’s all free on YouTube. Here’s the US Solutions Summit website link if you’re interested in finding out more, and the direct link to the event stream.

And if the US Solutions Summit isn’t your thing, you can still check out Independent Left News for headlines from a variety of independent, non-corporate media sites.
