A not-so-personal PC?
I’m writing this post on my phone. Why, you may ask?
My work has my laptop to update it, which at first doesn’t sound bad at all. But first they’re going to erase the hard drive, and when I get it back, I found out I won’t be able to restore from my backup and put my own stuff on it again. This was completely unexpected, and I’m curious what other people think about this.
As part of my job, I’m provided a laptop, which I can take home and bring with me on trips for work. It’s a really nice perk, and I’m fortunate my employer does this.
I had one laptop for about 6 years, and the current one for three. And I was told when I got my first laptop that I could have my own apps, documents, etc on it.
But apparently, the policy for laptops changed in the past couple years. I can’t install my own apps (only approved ones through their system), there’s limits to what I can and can’t have in it, sync with it, etc.
It’s going to be a huge headache for me to figure out what to do with all the stuff I’ve backed up and can’t restore to my computer once it’s updated.
So my question is, is this fair? It’s a work computer, but should people be able to have their own stuff on it, too? Is this common — was I just lucky before that they let me have my own stuff? Or should I be able to put on there what I want as long as I actually do my job, like I always have?
Let me know what you think!
