JFK, CIA — what else do I have to say(?)
I’m a big Billy Joel fan. One of my favorite songs is “We Didn’t Start The Fire.” It’s basically a musical rundown of major world events from Joel’s birth year until the song’s release in 1989.
There’s a line in the song about the JFK assassination
“JFK. Blown away. What else do I have to say?”
It was an event that changed the course of history and people from that generation would talk about where they were when they found out, similar to my generation for 9/11.
As you probably know, there’s never been an explanation that’s completely satisfying to many people of how exactly Lee Harvey Oswald would have been able to assassinate the president with one bullet from a distance — not to mention the either unfortunate or too convenient coincidence that Oswald was shot and killed by Jack Ruby just days later with cameras rolling while in police custody.
So when “We Didn’t Start the Fire” comes up on Spotify or runs through my head, I change the lyrics half-jokingly to
“JFK. CIA. What else do I have to say?”
This recent headline and story caught my eye. It turns out that the CIA may have trained Oswald or involved him in a secret operation in 1963, the year JFK was assassinated. They’ve denied for years having any involvement with him, but documents that are soon to be released should settle the issue once and for all, assuming they don’t find a way to push back the deadline again for releasing them.
So do you think the CIA was behind the assassination of JFK? Or that they at the very least had some involvement with Oswald? Do you think it’s just a crazy conspiracy theory? Or that maybe we’ll never find out? We may know by the end of the year, so I guess we’ll see!
