A mask with a Star Trek dad joke? Make it sew!
It’s the little things that keep me going sometimes. And today, it’s the fact that I finally received my Star Trek “Make it Sew” mask! 🥳
I’ve been using a pic of the mask since April or May 2020 to help encourage people to wear a mask. Anyone who may be familiar with my live comments during The Young Turks or my tweets might already know that I love a good dad joke. Or even a bad one.
(Side note: Cenk Uygur, the host of The Young Turks and (in)famous teller of dad jokes, read a comment from me joking that people should chip in $1 every time he told a dad joke to help TYT make its fundraising goal. They did, my joke about dad jokes may have helped towards reaching the goal, lol.)
ANYWAY, I’m also a Star Trek fan, especially The Next Generation. I found the mask thanks to a Google search for Star Trek and mask.
I used to have a cropped version of the double face-palm meme (below) as my profile pic, so I picked this mask as my new pic because it had Picard, it had Riker, it had a face palm, it had a dad joke, while also supporting #GetAMask. I don’t think I could have come up with a better idea for a mask that I would like more.
Those who know Star Trek (the whole Trekkie vs Trekker debate is apparently raging again, and I’m not sure I want to enter that minefield right now, lol) know that Captain Jean-Luc Picard, played by self-described socialist Patrick Stewart, often used to say “Make it so!” when he gave an order.
Commander Will Riker, aka Number One (first officer under Captain Picard), is the one doing a face palm on the mask when Picard makes his dad joke, saying “Make it sew!” instead of “Make it so!”
After more than a year, I finally bought the mask. Love the art, love the joke. It’s not too bad as a mask — it’s one layer, so not as protective as the Medicare For All mask I got. I wouldn’t wear this mask on its own, but I plan to wear it when I’m double-masking as the top mask. Here’s the link in case you’re interested (they have hats and shirts with the same design, too.)
I wonder how many laughs or groans I’ll get when people see the mask. Either way, it’ll totally be worth it.
Instead of ending this post with “Make it so/sew”, I’ll quote another Star Trek captain, adapting a line from the book Peter Pan: “Second star to the right... and straight on ‘til morning”. Not sure where that will lead me from my current location, but if I don’t get too lost I’ll be back tomorrow with another blog entry.
