Do you multitask during work or school meetings?

Since the pandemic started, a lot of us have been attending work meetings or classes on Zoom/Skype/Teams or other videoconferencing platforms.

Do you ever do personal stuff — Twitter or Facebook, reading the news, texting friends or your significant other, etc. — while you’re in these meetings? Or are you completely focused on the meeting and work?

I’ll admit it — I sometimes do other things while I’m in a meeting, depending on what the meeting is and what my expected level of participation is.

For example, if it’s a virtual meeting with 5 people, I’m probably not going to be checking Twitter at the same time.

If it’s a Zoom meeting with 50 people, after a year and a half of Zoom meetings, I’ve noticed that I do other unrelated things more and more often now during meetings — checking email, tweet a quick reply, read an article. I may sometimes even edit or write stuff for my blog — I’m not saying that I’m doing that right now, but I’m also not *not* saying that I’m doing that right now.

I’ve actually done what’s in the meme below a few times!

When I’m in person though, I never or very rarely do this. Partly because I think it’s rude if the person/people speaking notices I’m not fully paying attention.

I also don’t want my coworkers to “catch” me not being fully in the meeting mentally. I see other people who check emails, texts, etc. during meetings — even fairly small meetings — but for me, it’s really only with virtual meetings that I do it.

I’m curious to see what you guys say. My guess is a lot of people are doing personal stuff during personal meetings.

But then again, I was wrong about another work versus personal question: I wrote a post and did Twitter poll thinking that a lot of people were going to say they put personal stuff on their work computers, when in reality most people said they didn’t and that it’s a really bad idea. So maybe I’ll be surprised this time, too!

If you’re reading this — either instead of or in addition to attending a virtual meeting right now — I hope the rest of your work day goes well today! But before you go, please take one last minute to take the $50 donation poll before midnight Eastern tonight.
