So many progressive shows, so little time
I think I’ve gotten into a rut in terms of what shows and news sources I go to. This is not at all a criticism of those shows and sites, it’s a criticism of myself. It’s easier to stick with what you know than seek out new shows. So I’m looking for suggestions of what to check out that I haven’t before or haven’t recently.
Here are my six go-tos that I already watch or listen to. I’m listing them in the order of how often I’ve watched/listened to them so far this year. What are you thoughts?
At the end of this post, you can also vote for who’ll get the $50 donation from eclecticmisc.org this month!
Weekends. This is cheating a little because it’s only once a week, and it’s on a weekend (whence the name), so it’s easier to not miss episodes. But it may be my favorite show right now in terms of learning more about our system.
The Young Turks. This is probably tied with TDR for my favorite for finding out what’s in the news. I’m on a university schedule, and over winter break I don’t think I missed any show or postgame. Since then I had to cut down to 2-3 shows a week live, and listening to the podcast for the others.
The Damage Report. I love TDR but can’t watch it every day anymore. I really wish I could. Noon Central Time often doesn’t work for me right now. But I feel like part of the community — I helped create the unofficial official DragonSquad list of Dragon Names. I broke the news about TDR finally getting merch on Shop TYT (well, I quote-tweeted a reply to me by ShopTYT and John read it on air). My year of undergrad journalism paid off, lol. So I try to either watch or listen to the podcast.
Democracy Now. My first love as progressive shows, although I prefer TYT and TDR now.
Economic Update with Richard Wolf, which Ana turned me on to. He breaks down economics past and present so well that
Around the Nation, which won the vote for the first monthly donation from eclecticmisc.org to a progressive show or organization! 3pm Central is about the worst time of day for my schedule, but I’m trying to make it 2 times a week now.
Three others I sometimes but don’t always listen to or watch.
Bad Faith with Briahna Joy Gray and Virgil Texas. They “made me” sign up because I wanted to get the full infamous Chomsky interview that seemed to ignore progressives’ issues with voting for Biden (although he’s redeemed himself since IMO).
The Kyle Kulinski show. Before going to Politicon 2019, I really hadn’t seen much of Kyle Kulinski. I saw two of the three events he was featured in (a debate and a panel) and I was extremely impressed. For his show, sometimes I’ll listen to part of it but usually run out of time.
Amped up with Ryan Knight. He co-founded the Movement for a People’s Party, which hasn’t distanced itself from Jimmy Dore’s baseless attacks, and Dore flirting with joining up with the far right. But since Ryan Knight said this weekend that he’s stepping away from MPP, I’m still listening for now.
How do I possibly keep up with so many shows on a fairly regular basis? By watching or listening to ones I miss in 2x or even 3x speed. My wife hates anything not at normal speed, but I can’t imagine not listening to some of these at full speed (Amy Goodman at regular speed now sounds to me like she’s been hit with a tranquilizer dart or something!).
I would like to know what should be my next show to check out. Your ideas?
