Support the Kellogg’s Strikers!

Kellogg’s management just announced that they will be ending the employment of 1,400 workers. Not just any workers — union members who have been striking to demand an end to 80-hour, 7-day work weeks they’ve been dealing with, and to oppose slashing the pay and benefits for new employees.

Compared to many strikes, this one has received at least a small amount of coverage in the mainstream media, and still Kellogg’s apparently thinks they can get away with this.

This is horrible news, both for over a thousand workers and their families, but labor in general. Workers fought, suffered, and even died over more than a century in the US — and several hundred years worldwide — to get a 40-hour work week, basic workplace protections, and the right to strike. And now, Kellogg’s is just going to replace 1,400 workers who are exercising their right to withhold their labor to get better work conditions.

I don’t see how anyone can justify the position that anyone should work 7 days a week for months on end. How is this even a discussion, much less a months-long strike?

And the striking workers aren’t just doing this just for themselves (which would be enough to justify their action) — they’re also fighting so that new employees won’t get cuts to pay and benefits.

Apparently Kellogg was hoping current workers would be looking out just for themselves and not care about future employees. Kellogg’s doesn’t understand the meaning of — and the power of — solidarity.

If you can, please support the Kellogg’s workers however you can: signing a petition, spreading the word on social media, or donating to the strike fund so striking workers and their families have food to eat and can pay the bills while they fight for their rights, and now for their jobs.
