A pac(k) to end corruption
NOTE: I’m speaking for myself, as I always do. These views are my own and don’t represent Wolf-PAC. I wanted to make that clear since I’m a Wolf-PAC volunteer, but am speaking in my own capacity. Now that that’s out of the way…
Let’s face it — the political establishment in the United States runs on corporate cash and dark money. There are only very few elected officials on a national level (notably, the Justice Democrats) who won’t take large amounts of cash from donors who aren’t accountable to voters.
And there’s little motivation for these corrupt politicians — who want to keep their donors happy so the corporate cash continues to flow to them — to reform the system.
Government obviously does not serve the American people currently. A large majority of people want stricter gun laws, but the gun industry overrules them; people’s desire for bold climate action is trumped by Big Oil, Medicare for All isn’t even seriously considered in Washington because the insurance industry is against it, etc.).
And more and more, members of the House and Senate don’t even hide it very well anymore — and the media let them get away with it!
That’s where Wolf-PAC comes in. If elections are free and fair again, without the corrupting influx of all of this money, then we have a chance of changing the system.
Supporting politicians like Nina Turner (please donate or volunteer for her — and vote for her if you’re in her district!) who refuse to take corporate PAC money is one huge step. But it’s not enough by itself.
A candidate here or there doesn’t fix the system. That’s why I started supporting Wolf-PAC, and more recently, volunteer for them. I don’t think PACs, at least in their current form, should exist. But Wolf-PAC is fighting for a Constitutional amendment that would help overturn Citizens United and get rid of the big money donors who are ruining our country.
Here’s their goal:
How do we get a Constitutional Amendment? Congress isn’t going to decide to stop themselves from getting billions of dollars in donations. So We the People need to, State by State, get a Convention.
The Constitution says we need 2/3rds of State legislatures (which rounds up to 34 out of the current 50 States) to call for an Article V Convention. So far, five States have approved it, which leaves a way to go. But two pieces of good news:
on a State level, politicians can be more easily convinced by the will of the people since they get less dark money and are arguably more dependent on their actual constituents, unlike those in Washington.
this is an issue that truly speaks to people across the political spectrum. People want corruption out of politics, on the right and on the left. So Wolf-PAC has a number of conservative allies, in addition to liberal, progressive, and independent ones. That’s a huge deal, especially with so many State legislatures currently held by the GOP.
There are a number of ways you can support Wolf-PAC
One-time or recurring donations
Volunteering on the State level to write to or meet with politicians to get them on board, or to at least consider it
Working in teams for the national organization to write op-eds, do research, collaborate on social media responses, and more
If you haven’t yet, you should check out Wolf-PAC. I’m a volunteer, and again I don’t speak for them in any official capacity, but this is my take on what they do, why I support them, and why I think you should give them a look. http://wolf-pac.com.
P.S. Thank you to my recent Twitter follower @AndrewLin06 for asking more about Wolf-PAC, which gave me the idea for this post!
