April’s donation: Richard Wolff’s Economic Update and Doctors without Borders
Thank you to everyone who voted in the April poll for a $50 donation from eclecticmisc.org to a progressive-friendly cause or organization.
For the first time, we had a tie! For this reason, April’s donation from eclecticmisc.org will be split between the top two vote-getters:
Doctors without Borders (aka Médecins sans frontières) and
Democracy at Work/Economic Update with esteemed economist Richard Wolff!
Each has received a $25 donation (receipts – literally – at the end of this post)
Richard Wolff is the host of the radio show/podcast Economic Update and the founder of Democracy At Work, a non-profit that views capitalism as a problem & democratizing workplaces as a solution. I’m subscribed to EU, and Prof. Wolff does such a great job of explaining current-day economic issues and their causes, while putting it into the broader historical context of socialism and workers’ rights.
Here are two of the comments on the poll mentioned why people voted for Democracy At Work
Prof. Wolff explains Marxist economics in a user-friendly manner, and Dr. Fraad explains how capitalism plays a role in the nation's poor state of mental health.
Professor Wolff is doing important work breaking down the argument for why Socialism makes sense and can combat the ills of capitalism that so many Americans are facing.
I am happily surprised that Doctors without Borders made it, since my Twitter activity is almost solely politically based and Doctors without Borders is very decidedly NOT political in their relief efforts. That’s part of what makes it so great. MSF (Médecins Sans Frontières — they often go by the initials for the organization in French even in English) is a humanitarian & medical non-profit. They received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1999 for its ongoing efforts to provide International disaster relief & long-term aid, and raise awareness of crises that often get overlooked by the media or other relief organizations.
A couple of comments that site visitors left about why they voted for MSF:
[Their] work especially in areas like Palestine can only be described as heroic. Have colleagues that have volunteered for same.
They could use the resources very effectively.
I will talk more about Doctors without Borders and Richard Wolff in future blog posts.
The ACLU, TYT, and Justice Dems also got several votes.
TYT all the way!!!!!! #PuffDragon
I figure the ACLU will have their hands full with all the voter suppression laws coming out.
I choose a different one each time because they are all so good.
Doctors Without Borders and Democracy at Work join Jeff Waldorf’s Around the Nation, Jacobin Magazine, and Nina Turner in receiving a donation from eclecticmisc.org, this month splitting the $50 since they tied.
Which cause, organization, or show will you pick next month? I’ll be posting the poll tomorrow, so please come back to vote in the $50 donation poll for May!
