Friday! Friday! Ge’in' down on Friday!

Sometimes I hate Fridays. Why. Because of that damn song by Rebecca Black.

Every. Single. Goddamn. Friday, I think of that song.

I can’t help it. It’s like the saying that you can’t tell someone *not* to think of a blue-eyed polar bear. As soon as you mention a blue-eyed polar bear, your mind pictures it whether you want to or not. You have to think of it in order not to think of it. You can’t help it.

I don’t hate the song itself. I actually kind of like it. I have nothing against Rebecca Black. I don’t know why she and her video got so much hate.

Sure, Friday not a lyrical masterpiece (which to be fair to Rebecca Black, I should point out she didn’t write it).

Kickin' in the front seat
Sittin' in the back seat
Gotta make my mind up
Which seat can I take?

But lots of popular songs aren’t. Even by some of the greatest songwriters of all time.

Take the Beatles (you can hate on me if you want for comparing Rebecca Black with the Beatles, but humor me for a minute here). One of their well-known songs was “Birthday.”

This was not Paul McCartney’s finest hour. (Or his finest 5 minutes, which is probably how long it took to write these words.)

You say it's your birthday
It's my birthday too, yeah
They say it's your birthday
We're gonna have a good time
I'm glad it's your birthday
Happy birthday to you

I’m not saying that the entire Beatles’ catalogue can be summed up by Birthday. I’m a huge Beatles fan. Lennon-McCartney was perhaps the best songwriting duo of all time (and Harrison more than held his own, too).

I’m also not saying that Birthday is a bad song. Just hear me out. Both Friday and Birthday have simple, repetitive lyrics. But they’re both catchy. They’re fun. And I like them both.

Yes, I admit it. I like Friday. I don’t like that I like it. But I do. But I still hate it because it will never leave me alone.

Why don’t I hate Birthday? For Birthday, I usually think of it only…for birthdays. Maybe a few times a year, for the birthdays of my immediate family and close friends. Or when it comes up on Spotify. Also, no one’s going to laugh at me if they see the song Birthday in my browsing history in Chrome.

But Friday is a once-a-week thing. There’s not enough time to forget about the song Friday. Ever. Apparently until the day I die.

Am I the only one who’s cursed with this? Or is it a blessing? Do you like the song Friday? Hate it? Hate me for comparing it to the Beatles? Let me know in the comments below or on Twitter!
