Am I funny, serious, or neither?
Sorry for no post yesterday. I started this post in the afternoon yesterday , but when I finally got back it was already tomorrow anyway in much of the world. And it actually turns out something happened today that was exactly what I was writing about!
I often live tweet during progressive shows almost obsessively (what do you mean, I have a problem? I don’t have a problem. I could stop any time if I wanted to!). I’m lucky that my comments get read on-air pretty often, and get a relatively good amount of likes, retweets, and comments.
I get at least as much love as before, if not more, from my TYT Family, and Weekends and Around the Nation when I can watch. It honestly is what keeps me going some days. But lately, it seems like the comments people are liking and replying to the most are my more serious comments, and not my funny ones (or ones where I’m trying to be funny at least!).
Just today (March 24), my serious comment about the reasons why gun control won’t pass got picked to be read on air. Woo-hoo!
Ana Kasparian, host and executive producer of The Young Turks, read the comment, and even said thank you to me for doing more research into this more than the mainstream media ever does.
I’m really glad that this comment got read on air since I thought it made an important point, and also had several people who liked or reply on the members’ site and Twitter. I’m glad that I was able to quickly find and share a fact like that and that viewers also found out about that stat like I just did (after 5 years of live-tweeting, I’ve gotten good at finding random facts pretty quickly!).
But I also used to get more reactions to my jokes online. My wife likes to tell me that I’m not funny, but that sometimes I’m clever. She’s half-joking, half-serious when she says this. I think.
I do try to be funny, a lot more often online than in person. And I think I am, at least sometimes. This is probably one of my two or three favorite comments that got read on air. Both Cenk and Ana laughed at a Super Chat I sent about Ana’s birthday. When I showed the clip to her later that night, my wife finally admitted that I’m funny, at least sometimes.
But right now, either because I’ve changed and aren’t as funny as I was a few years ago, or people’s reactions to my comments have changed, the ones that get the most love are my serious or sarcastic posts. Does it mean I’m not funny anymore?
Before: People seemed to like it more when I was trying to be funny or clever
Now: People seem to like it more when I’m trying to be sarcastic or serious
The ironic part is: this post isn’t any of those! So maybe I need to start branching out into irony instead. Anyway, I’ll just keep on keeping on and let people decide what they like or don’t like. And there’s always the mute button if I get too annoying. 😶/😀
