The top vote-getter for June: the ACLU
Thank you to everyone who voted in the June poll for a $50 donation from eclecticmisc.org to a progressive-friendly cause or organization.
And the winner is — the ACLU! Read more about the ACLU and comments by people who voted in the poll below, or take the July poll to help decide who’ll get a $50 donation from eclecticmisc.org.
As many, if not everyone, reading this knows, the American Civil Liberties Union is a non-profit organization founded in 1920 whose founding mission was “defend and preserve the individual rights and liberties guaranteed to every person in this country.” Here’s a link to their website (aclu.org)
In a large number of cases, the ACLU’s positions are very much in sync with what most progressives would support. Among many examples are:
supporting LGBTQ+ rights
defending the right to abortion and birth control
protecting the separation of state and church
opposing capital punishment
In a few cases, their positions go against what many progressives would agree with. One example is defending racists, for example the Ku Klux Klan, who apply for permits to hold parades and protests.
To be honest, I’m not sure what my solution would be for people who abuse their 1st Amendment rights to advocate for violence, or to call for taking away those of others. But once you start curbing the free speech of one group, it could be a slippery slope applied to others.
But in a large majority of cases that make the news, and from what I’ve read in general for their court cases and petitions, the ACLU is very largely a positive force for protecting and advancing civil and civic rights.
Here’s a comment left by one person who took the poll to explain why they voted for the ACLU Here are the receipts (literally) for the $50 donation. I’m happy to support this important organization. Thank you to all who voted, and make sure to vote in the July poll!
Another person supported an organization I haven’t heard of before, but which sounds like it is an organization supporting a very important cause, so while I can’t vouch for them either way, you may want to check them out, too.
Chase Iron Eyes Esq. & The Lakota Peoples Law Project have been defending our right to clean air & water for generations as well as legally. Since No DAPL & Sacred Stone Camp movement tha was watched around the world laws have changed making it a felony to protest in several states. And now with the arrest at line 3 in MN they're going to need help again. I get upset when I think of all the people that went to SD in 2016 to help water protectors and in four short years it seems everyone has forgotten that Native Americans are once again holding the frontlines against climate change in our neck of the woods. So who's got their backs this time around?
Here are the poll results and receipt for the donation:
