Snow day, part 1
A huge winter storm of historic proportions is affecting tens of millions of people across much of the Midwest, Eastern, and Southern US. (Completely unrelated to climate change, I’m sure climate deniers would say).
My daughter’s school is out and they just announced it will be tomorrow also.
We are without power right now, like 122,000 other customers in Memphis, so likely over two hundred thousand people if you take into account the fact that some of those are multi-person houses or units (families, etc.) or multi-unit housing (duplexes, apartments, etc.). I hope that everyone will be able to find a way to stay safe and warm, including the unhoused because it’s going to be in the teens tonight.
Here in Memphis, no snow — “just” frozen rain, and rain that’s freezing on the trees, roofs, and power lines. Which is actually more dangerous than snow, since the frozen rain weighs on tree branches and power lines, causing both of the to fall. We’ve heard some pretty big branches fall not far from us, and all we can do is hope none fall on our house or cars. Just heard a big “boom” as I was typing this, which my wife says looks like it was a large branch falling a couple doors down.
But hey, Memphis is making national news at least (why can’t it every be for something good?!?)
We have tons of warm clothes and blankets, so we should be fine in terms of temperature.
We also have batteries charged for today, and if the roads are okay I can go into work tomorrow and plug them in there to charge them up and come back for them later — I mean, to stop in and do some work and coincidentally charge our devices and batteries 😁. Without Internet and power I won’t be online too much today and I’m signing off shortly after posting this.
But in my next post tomorrow, I’m going to rant about — oops, I mean talk about — how the cherished idea of snow day, which many of us who grew up with in the northern and middle US, is being ruined.
In the meantime, to those of us affected by the storm, stay safe and stay warm and let’s hope we as a city and country can do a better job of making sure everyone is safe and has power since this type of megastorm is only going to happen more and more often now.
