Snow day, part 2
It’s Day 5 of us still being without power after Storm Landon hit.
By the way, since when do storms get their own names? Did they feel left out because hurricanes got names and they didn’t?
For us in Memphis, it was an ice storm rather than a snow storm, and it wreaked havoc on the entire city, with over 130,000 losing power.
Day One was kind of fun. If you look at my blog from Thursday, I was in pretty good spirits.
Day 2 was okay. It started getting colder in the house at night, but it was still kind of fun.
By Day 3 without power, I was kind of over it. Very over it, actually.
Yesterday (Day 4) was when my wife was. Our daughter still thinks it’s a fun adventure sleeping in our sleeping bags, bundled in winter clothes and wearing hats and gloves to bed. Last night it was down to 43°F in our house (!!!), with the lows outside getting below 20°F.
It still could be a couple of days until we get power back: MLGW (our utility company) says repairs might not be finished until Thursday. For our block, it still says “assessing damage.” Maybe we’ll be back up tonight, maybe it’ll be Thursday. We just don’t know.
Our nearest relatives are hundreds of miles away, and other people we know either don’t have power, got a hotel or went to stay with family, or don’t really have room for us to stay. We debated finding a hotel, but those filled up quickly, and driving a long way in and out wasn’t practical, not to mention expensive. Now that the roads and sidewalks are no longer icy, and we’re not afraid tree limbs are going to fall on us or our house as they have in our neighborhood and across the city, we’ve gone out a few times to warm up.
So anyway, that’s why I haven’t been online recently. I know we’re relatively lucky. I hope anyone else hit badly by the storm, from Texas to the East Coast (and more), are staying warm and safe.
Today and the next couple days I’ll be playing catch-up either at work, or working from home so I won’t be online much either but will try to check in to make sure World War III hasn’t started (which doesn’t sound as far fetched as it would have last year). Let’s hope we have power and WiFi at home again soon! 🤞
