The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) came out with a report today that basically said that as far as climate change goes, we’re fucked.
You can read more details about the report via the link above. But as Reuters sums it up:
“Deadly heat waves, gargantuan hurricanes and other weather extremes that are already happening will only become more severe.”
The UN Secretary-General said "This report must sound a death knell for coal and fossil fuels, before they destroy our planet."
We’ve been having an insane year in terms of the climate. The Arctic is melting at a rate that even the worst models weren’t predicting. Record-shattering heat waves in the Pacific Northwest and elsewhere on the planet. Massive flooding destroying thousands of homes and businesses from the Americas to Europe. Enormous wildfires in California and the Amazon destroying forests the size of entire states.
Governments have not been reining in Big Oil and other huge polluters, due to legalized bribes to politicians (massive direct and indirect donations to politicians) and other direct and indirect pressure from fossil fuel companies and the business world more broadly. Citizens have often been unwilling to take basic steps like public transportation, hybrid or electric cars, bikes or walking.
It’s already too late to stop civilization-changing climate change from happening. The only question is, what can we do to stop it from getting even worse.
We must demand our politicians, on the local, state, and national level, take immediate actions to keep the climate from becoming a worse nightmare than it already will be. We have to do it for our children and for generations to come.
We need Joe Biden, Nancy Pelosi, Chuck Schumer, and their Republican counterparts to stop this bipartisan bullshit designed to prevent either side from actually taking decisive climate action.
Will this report finally get it through their corrupt skulls that they have to take bold action now?
A politician experiencing this kind of epiphany is probably too much to hope for, so we need to demand change. Source
Politicians need to know we will withhold our votes if they keep choosing short-term corporate cash over the survival of our environment.
We need to stop buying goods from corporations who are destroying the planet until they reverse course and put their billions to good use. And we need to take action to demand that the government ensures the public good. For example, joining the Sunrise Movement, supporting candidates who Green New Deal (or even more robust legislation), buying an electric car or using alternate transportation, phone calls, protests, boycotts, strikes…
It’s already too late to stop climate change. We need decisive action to slow it down — today.
