‘Tis the season…for progressive holiday songs

The cover of the funny yet serious album Peace Nick by singer-songwriter Roy Zimmerman. I got to meet and talk to him in person!

My mom used to get annoyed that around this time of year, all of the sudden you’d start hearing the word ‘tis, especially in the expression ‘Tis the season, over and over again.

Unusual, “random” things like that annoyed her sometimes, which for better or worse I’ve inherited from her.

But one thing that does not annoy me (that my friends is what in the blogging business we call a segue) are holiday songs that aren’t traditional — that have a different twist to them.

These usually fall into two categories:

  • ones that express liberal or progressive ideas —for example John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas (War is Over)”, Stevie Wonder’s “Someday at Christmas”;

  • ones that poke fun at the holiday season or the religious aspects of it — Weird Al’s “The Night Santa Went Crazy”, Roy Zimmerman’s “Christma-Hanu-Rama-Ka-Dona-Kwanzaa.”

I have a playlist of these and a dozen other songs on Spotify. You can check it out below! (Or search for Eclectic Mistletoe on Spotify.)

Plus, as you’re listening or before you go, don’t forget there’s the monthly $50 donation poll where you vote for a progressive-friendly org, cause, show, etc. that you think I should give a $50 donation to. It just takes a minute to vote (literally)! See you tomorrow for more content on my blog.

Bonus song: Jesus and Santa from South Park. It’s a lounge act with the two main stars of Christmas singing a medley of holiday songs about themselves. Not available on Spotify unfortunately, but it’s laugh-out-loud funny.
