Winter is (not) coming?
It’s 71°F in Memphis. On December 29th.
With a worldwide pandemic going on — and millions of people facing existential issues like whether or not they’ll have a home, job, or food tomorrow — sometimes we forget how crazy the weather has gotten the past few years.
The climate crisis has gotten bad that as I mentioned in an earlier post, some mainstream outlets are even being forced to mention climate change.
But as I was outside and thinking about how it felt nice but a little too humid, I remembered that if anything I should be worried in December about whether it’s going to be cold or chilly outside.
Here’s today’s weather (Dec. 29) in Memphis compared to historically.
20 degrees above the historic average. One degree from the highest temp since they started keeping records in the 1930s here.
It’s been like this almost all month, both when I’ve been here and when I was out of town. These temps are more like what we should be getting in October.
Here are two different graphs, the first one has this year’s highs, lows, and average temp each day in December this year. The second graph has historically what the average high temperature and low temperature are here.
If you compare the two charts, the average low temperature this year is higher than the average high temperature historically!

Great news for people who want to hang out, have a picnic, take walks, or cut down on their heating bill. I hate to be the Debbie Downer, but it’s bad news that we keep having extreme temperatures and storms here and across the planet, and we don’t know from one day to the next if it’s spring, summer, fall, or winter.
🚨 Come back tomorrow (Thursday) for the last Guest Post of the year! If you’re interested in doing a guest post, here’s more info! Guest post series.
