Global trade versus global strike
A light bulb went off over my head when I got an alert from the New York Times this morning. Here’s a Twitter thread where I explain it:
I know I’m not the first one to say we need a global labor movement. And I’ve already thought for months that this is the perfect opportunity to do it — actually, the best opportunity was probably right after the pandemic hit when things were more closed down here in the US and many western countries.
If Amazon workers, grocery employees, Uber Eats drivers all threatened to go on strike, they would have had the upper hand. It’s not too late though, with the Amazon unionization drive in Alabama revealing more about the horrible conditions there, the Democrats failing to follow through on their $15/hr min. wage promise.
The questions is *how do we do this*? Storytelling like I tried to do in my tweet, except done much better, could be a very important part of getting people on board, in my opinion. It’s not all that’s needed, but it could plant a seed that will make people more receptive once a more organized effort starts to break through.
